A Tree Lives On

Green sprouts innocently
in short vicinity
of a scorched trunk;
begged by a blackened floor,
urged on by fallen rain
in birthing red of dawn upon
the night when lightning struck
indifferently.

I recently won a poetry competition under the theme of "healing" with this piece, so I thought I'd share it as my first entry. I wrote it last year during a train ride with a thunderstorm outside. It's about a burned down tree, struck by lightning, whose nutritious ashes - with the help of the rain and sun - gives birth to new sprouts and thus carry on in nature's resilient cycle of life.
